Who would think that the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair, organised by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce would have beautiful art as well. If you head over to The Niche Showcase, you’ll find the works of Thai artist Arin Rungjang. Ruangjang’s masterful pieces were previously displayed at the world’s largest international contemporary art festival, Documenta 14.
To reflect the new image of Thai jewlery “Thailand’s Magic Hands”—which focuses on the craftsmanship of Thai artisans—will display one of Arin Rungjang’s most famous pieces at The Niche Showcase. With the amount of security guards standing around it, it’s easy for us to see how valuable this piece is.
Mongkut or the Mahapichai Mongkut is a replica of the crown that King Rama IV gave to Napoleon III to strengthen relations between the two nations. In order to create the replica, Arin had to request permission to use a 3D-scanner on the original crown which, at the time, was kept at the Chateau de Fontainebleau in France. The scans were then used to meticulously create a replica using original techniques, and the person who aided Arin in this task was none other than Woralak Sooksawasdi Na Ayutthaya, a great-great-great granddaughter of King Rama IV.
In addition to Mongkut, which represents High Jewlery, The Niche Showcase also has exhibits designed for 4 other niche markets. These include ‘Luxe Men’ jewlery for the modern man, ‘Heritage and Craftsmanship’ jewlery using old artisan techniques, ‘Spiritual Power’ or talisman jewlery, and ‘Beyond Jewlery’ for pieces that go beyond decorative purposes.

เพื่อสะท้อนถึงแคมเปญภาพลักษณ์ใหม่ของอุตสาหกรรมจิวเวลรี่ไทย “Thailand’s Magic Hands มหัศจรรย์แห่งหัตถาช่างศิลป์ไทย” ที่เชิดชูทักษะฝีมือทางเชิงช่างของชาวไทยที่สืบทอดกันมาตั้งแต่โบราณ นิทรรศการ The Niche Showcase จึงได้เชิญผลงาน Mongkut ของอริญชย์มาให้ได้ชมเป็นไฮไลต์ ซึ่งดูจากหน่วยรปภ. ที่ยืนแวดล้อมอยู่โดยรอบแล้วคงไม่ต้องบอกว่ามูลค่าของงานชิ้นนี้มีมากแค่ไหน
Mongkut หรือมหาพิชัยมงกุฎจำลองนี้ได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากมหาพิชัยมงกุฏจำลองที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวส่งไปเป็นเครื่องบรรณาการให้แก่กษัตริย์นโปเลียนที่ 3 เพื่อกระชับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสองชาติ เพื่อจะสร้างมงกุฎนี้ให้เหมือนของจำลององค์แรกมากที่สุด อริญชย์ได้ขออนุญาตเพื่อนำเครื่องสแกนแบบสามมิติไปสแกนมงกุฎองค์จำลองที่ประดิษฐานอยู่ในพระราชวังฟงแตนเบลอในฝรั่งเศส จากนั้นก็นำแบบมาสร้างเป็นมงกุฎจำลององค์ใหม่ด้วยทักษะทางเชิงช่างแบบโบราณ ซึ่งผู้ที่ได้รับหน้าที่สร้างสรรค์นี้ก็คือวรลักษณ์ ศุขสวัสดิ ณ อยุธยา ซึ่งเป็นโหลนของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวนั่นเอง
นอกจากผลงาน Mongkut ซึ่งเป็นตัวแทนของ High Jewelry แล้ว นิทรรศการ The Niche Showcase ยังจัดแสดงผลงานจิวเวลรี่ที่ออกแบบเพื่อตลาดเฉพาะกลุ่มอีก 4 เทรนด์ ด้วย ได้แก่ Luxe Men เครื่องประดับสำหรับผู้ชายยุคใหม่, Heritage and Craftsmanship เครื่องประดับที่สะท้อนถึงหัตถศิลป์เก่าแก่, Spiritual Power เครื่องประดับแบบเครื่องรางของขลัง และ Beyond Jewelry ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องประดับที่เป็นมากกว่าเครื่องประดับ
