ใครเลยจะเดาได้ว่าอาคารคอนกรีตทรงเหลี่ยมสีดำทะมึนดูร่วมสมัยที่ตั้งอยู่กลางทุ่งหญ้าขนาดใหญ่ชายเมืองลาโชเดอฟ็องส์จะเป็นอาคารสำนักงานใหญ่และโรงงานของแบรนด์นาฬิกาซึ่งมีประวัติศาสตร์สืบย้อนกลับไปได้ถึงปี ค.ศ. 1738 ปีที่ปิแอร์ ฌาเกต์-โดรซ์ในวัย 17 ปีเริ่มประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาเป็นอาชีพ ผลงานของเขากลายเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างรวดเร็วในหมู่ลูกค้าผู้มีอันจะกินในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ก่อนที่จะไปเข้าตาบรรดาราชวงศ์ของสเปน อังกฤษ ฝรั่งเศสและจีนในเวลาต่อมา

ทุกวันนี้ Jaquet Droz เป็นบริษัทในเครือ Swatch Group มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2000 โดยได้รับการจัดตำแหน่งไว้ในกลุ่มแบรนด์นาฬิการะดับสูง เทียบเท่า Blancpain และ Breguet ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลายมากกว่า มี Grande Seconde เป็นคอลเลคชั่นเด่นที่เริ่มต้นเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2002 จุดเด่นอยู่ที่หน้าแปดซึ่งถอดแบบมาจากนาฬิกาพกจากปี ค.ศ. 1784 ของปิแอร์ ฌาเกต์-โดรซ์เอง
หน้าปัดที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของนาฬิการุ่นดังกล่าว ประกอบด้วยวงหน้าปัดเล็กด้านบนเพื่อใช้แสดงค่าชั่วโมงและนาที และวงหน้าปัดเล็กอีกวงหนึ่งด้านล่างเพื่อใช้แสดงค่าวินาที ทั้งสองวงนี้ทับซ้อนกันเล็กน้อยตรงกลางจนทำให้เกิดเป็นรูปทรงของตัวเลข 8 บนหน้าปัด ส่วนในคอลเลคชั่นอื่นๆ ถึงไม่มีเลข 8 ตรงๆ แต่ก็ยังมีการใช้ดีไซน์แบบวงกลมเล็กซ้อนในวงกลมใหญ่ให้เห็นได้อย่างชัดเจนอยู่ดี
หากนับจากปีเกิดของช่างนาฬิกาผู้เป็นเจ้าของนามสกุลที่กลายมาเป็นชื่อแบรนด์จนถึงวันนี้ก็เกือบจะครบสามศตรรรษเต็มแล้ว แต่มนต์ขลังที่ล้อมรอบชื่อแบรนด์ Jaquet Droz ก็ยังไม่ได้เสื่อมคลายไปแต่อย่างใด
นาฬิกาข้อมือหลายรุ่นยังคงมีออโตมาตอนที่บอกเล่าเรื่องราวในธรรมชาติอยู่บนหน้าปัด รุ่นเด่นรุ่นหนึ่งที่ออกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2017 ก็คือ Loving Butterfly Automaton บนหน้าปัดมีเทวดาตัวน้อยขี่รถม้าสไตล์โรมัน แต่ที่ทำหน้าที่ลากรถอยู่ข้างหน้ากลับเป็นผีเสื้อแทนที่จะเป็นม้า ฉากนี้มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์เพราะว่าเป็นหนึ่งในภาพที่หุ่นออโตมาตอน The Draughtsman ถูกโปรแกรมให้วาดได้ตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ และในวันนี้ Jaquet Droz ก็เพิ่มชีวิตให้กับภาพดังกล่าวด้วยกลไกออโตมาตอนในเครื่องนาฬิกา ทันทีที่คุณกดปุ่มซึ่งฝังอยู่ในเม็ดมะยม ล้อของรถม้าก็จะหมุนและปีกของผีเสื้อก็จะกระพือเป็นเวลานานเกือบสองนาทีจึงจะจบการแสดงรอบหนึ่ง
หลังจากที่ออก Loving Buttery Automaton รุ่นแรกเป็นหน้าปัดโอนิกซ์สีดำและหน้าปัดเปลือกหอยมุกสีดำ Jaquet Droz ก็มีการเพิ่มเติมหน้าปัดแบบใหม่ๆ เรื่อยมา ทั้งหน้าหินอุกกาบาต หน้าอเวนจูรีนและหน้าไม้ที่แข็งจนกลายเป็นหิน
การใช้หินแร่ต่างๆ ในการผลิตนาฬิกานั้นก็เป็นศิลปะอย่างหนึ่งที่ต้องอาศัยความเชี่ยวชาญของช่าง ขั้นตอนเริ่มตั้งแต่การหาจุดบนหินที่มีรายละเอียดสวยงามที่สุดแล้วใช้เลื่อยตัดออกมาจนเป็นแผ่นรูปทรงและขนาดใกล้เคียงกับหน้าปัดนาฬิกาจริงๆ จากนั้นจึงขัดเงาและเจาะรูบนแผ่นหน้าปัดเพื่อให้มีช่องสำหรับการติดตั้งเข็มนาฬิกาและองค์ประกอบประดับประดาอื่นๆ บนหน้าปัด เสร็จแล้วจึงขัดแผ่นหน้าปัดด้วยมือเป็นครั้งสุดท้ายจนความหนาลดลงเหลือเพียง 0.8 มม. ความยากลำบากตั้งแต่ต้นจนจบกระบวนการนี้ตกอยู่ที่ตัวช่างซึ่งต้องใช้ความระมัดระวังไม่ให้แผ่นหินแร่แตกหักเสียก่อนเพราะนอกจากจะเปราะแล้วยังบางอีกด้วย
หินแร่ที่ถูกนำมาใช้ในหน้าปัด Loving Buttery Automaton เวอร์ชั่นล่าสุดก็คือโอปอล สีน้ำเงิน สีเขียวและสีอื่นๆ ในเนื้อของโอปอลที่เปลี่ยนไปมาตามมุมที่แสงตกกระทบนั้นสามารถเพิ่มมิติและความลึกลับให้กับฉากแมกไม้ได้เป็นอย่างดี และตัวโอปอลเองยังมีความหมายสื่อถึงความรัก ความหลงใหล ความจงรักภักดีและความซื่อตรงด้วย จึงถือได้ว่าเป็นหินแร่ที่เหมาะสำหรับฉากของเทวดาตัวน้อยที่สุด
แต่ความพิเศษของ Jaquet Droz ไม่ได้จบเพียงแค่นี้ เพราะในขณะที่แบรนด์นาฬิกาส่วนมากผลิตนาฬิกาได้ดีแค่ในแนวเดียว กล่าวคือ ทำนาฬิกาสไตล์คลาสสิกได้ดี หรือทำนาฬิกาแนวล้ำยุคได้ดี แต่ Jaquet Droz นั้นเป็นหนึ่งในไม่กี่แบรนด์ที่สามารถทำได้ดีทั้งสองแนว
ในเรื่องนี้เราต้องใช้นาฬิการุ่น Grande Seconde Skelet-One เป็นตัวอย่าง เพราะนี่คือเรือนเวลาแบบคิดนอกกรอบของ Jaquet Droz ที่ยังคงรักษาไว้ซึ่งดีเอ็นเอของแบรนด์ตนได้เป็นอย่างดี
นาฬิกาสเกเลตั้นตัวเรือนขนาด 41 มม. รุ่นนี้มีเครื่องออโต้ที่ทุกส่วนถูกลดทอนเนื้อโลหะจนเหลือน้อยที่สุด บริดจ์ทั้งหมดทำหน้าที่ตรึงองค์ประกอบทั้งหมดของเกียร์เทรนไว้ให้เหมือนลอยอยู่ในอากาศ แม้แต่โรเตอร์ขึ้นลานเองก็ยังเป็นแบบโอเพ่นเวิร์คจึงไม่บดบังด้านหลังของตัวเครื่องในขณะทำหน้าที่ขึ้นลานให้กับแบเรลทั้งสองจนได้กำลังสำรองครบ 68 ชั่วโมงเต็ม และ Jaquet Droz เลือกใช้แซฟไฟร์คริสตอลเป็นวัสดุในการผลิตแผ่นหน้าปัดรูปทรงเลข 8 จึงทำให้นาฬิการุ่นนี้ดูเบาจนถึงระดับที่เรียกได้ว่าล่องลอย
Skelet-One เพิ่งจะมีรุ่นใหม่ออกมาอีกสองรุ่น รุ่นหนึ่งเป็นตัวเรือนเร้ดโกลด์บนสายหนังจระเข้ผิวกึ่งด้านข้างบน อีกรุ่นหนึ่งเป็นตัวเรือนพลาสมาเซรามิกกันรอยขีดข่วนบนสายผ้าสีเทาด้านล่าง ทั้งสองรุ่นดูคมเข้มและทันสมัยด้วยการใช้หลักชั่วโมงแบบผนึกติดที่ทำจากเร้ดโกลด์ในรุ่นตัวเรือนเร้ดโกลด์ (หรือทำจากไวท์โกลด์ในรุ่นตัวเรือนพลาสมาเซรามิก) แทนที่จะพิมพ์เลขชั่วโมงบนแผ่นแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลด้วยสีดำเหมือนอย่างในรุ่นก่อนหน้า

Few watch companies manage to excel at offering classical and futuristic products at the same time, and in such a harmonious fashion.

A black concrete building with reflective window panes sits on Allée du Tourbillon in the middle of a La Chaux-de-Fonds meadow. Looking at that modern and brutal architecture, one would be hard-pressed to guess that it is the headquarter and the manufacture building of a watch brand whose origin dates back to 1738. In that year, the 17-year-old Pierre Jaquet-Droz, a native of this very town, began to engage in the craft of clockmaking. His works were soon noticed by the wealthy clientele, first in Switzerland, then elsewhere in the world including the royalties of Spain, England, France and China.
The fame of his business could also be attributed to automatons – 18th century robots, if you will. Some of them were child-sized like the trio of The Writer, The Musician and The Draughtsman which survive until today and are exhibited at the Museum of Art and History in Neuchâtel, while some were so small they could be integrated into pocket watches and snuffboxes like the singing bird automatons.
A Swatch Group company since 2000, Jaquet Droz is positioned in the upper echelon alongside such prestigious brands as Blancpain and Breguet. Right from that modern-day beginning, they had that stroke of genius to launch the Grande Seconde collection in 2002 with a dial closely resembling a 1784 pocket watch by the brand’s founder.
On this iconic design, a small subdial for the hour and the minute is placed at the top, and a larger subdial for the second can be found below. Slightly overlapped, they form an unmistakable figure of 8 in a most subtle way. The pattern is loosely interpreted in other Jaquet Droz collections as well, mostly in the “circle in circle” style of presentation.
Today, almost three centuries after the birth of the eponymous watchmaker, that enchanting sense of mystery continues to surround the present day Montres Jaquet Droz SA.
Several wristwatches feature a nature-inspired automaton on the dial. One recent addition is the Loving Butterfly Automaton watch, first introduced in 2017. This special watch depicts a fairy tale-like scene which centres around a young cherub and his butterfly-drawn chariot – one of the pictures The Draughtsman automaton above is programmed to draw. To make the Loving Butterfly Automaton watch most remarkable, Jaquet Droz has made an animation out of the scene. At the press of the button in the crown, the wings of the butterfly will flap and the wheel of the chariot will spin. This mechanical show lasts approximately two minutes per session.
Other dial variations followed. After the original one in black onyx or black mother of pearl, the manufacture added choices such as meteorite, aventurine and petrified wood. The use of minerals to produce a watch dial is an art by itself. It begins with the cutting and slicing of dial disks out of the most beautiful sections of the rock. They are then polished and drilled to make holes for the hands, apertures and appliques. A final hand-polishing step brings thickness of each dial to a mere 0.8 mm. Extreme care must be used throughout the process as the hard stones are prone to breaking when worked in this way.
Opal is the latest stone to grace the Loving Butterfly Automaton. The iridescent stone adds to the depth and the enchantment of the forest scene with shades of blue, green and other colours in between which continue to change with the viewing angle. Opal also signifies love, passion, loyalty and faithfulness, making it the perfect mineral for what the cute little cherub stands for.
But the prowess of this high-end marque does not stop there. While most watch companies can make excellent traditional timepieces or awesome avant-garde ones, only a handful excel at both. Jaquet Droz belongs to this rarefied congregation of ambidexterity.
The Grande Seconde Skelet-One is a prime example of what Jaquet Droz can do when they want to think outside of the box while not losing touch with their original DNA.
On this 41 mm skeleton watch, the self-winding movement is reduced to the bare minimum. All bridges are hallowed out but continue to provide rigid support for the gear train components which seem as if they are hung in midair, and in fact they are. The same minimalistic approach is given to the openworked winding rotor on the back. Its two barrels combine to deliver a longer power reserve of 68 hours. Lastly, to ensure the loftiness of this mechanical wonder, and to remain consistent with the Jaquet Droz heritage, the figure of 8 subdials are crafted out of sapphire crystal.
The two latest iterations of the Skelet-One were introduced most recently: the new red gold version on semi-matt alligator leather strap above and the scratch resistant plasma ceramic option on the grey textile strap below. Both are described by the maison as “bold, creative, modern and on-trend”. The striking effect is achieved in one way by the solid aesthetics of the applied indexes in red gold or white gold, respectively.
Jaquet Droz seems to have checked all the right boxes. Their watches have all the good traits of being classy, original and very easily identifiable. And as made clear above, they are a historically rich marque with that unique ability of staying true to their identity while also allowing creativity to flourish.
