ภาพพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษกที่ปรากฏบนหน้าจอโทรทัศน์รวมการเฉพาะกิจแห่งประเทศไทยในช่วงสุดสัปดาห์นี้เป็นภาพแห่งความปลื้มปิติและน่าเคารพ ถือเป็นโชคดีของปวงประชาชนชาวไทยที่ได้ชมความสวยงามของขนบธรรมเนียม พิธีกรรม ตลอดจนสถาปัตยกรรมตามสถานที่ต่างๆ อันเป็นโบราณสถานอันล้ำค่า เมื่อคืนนี้เองหลังจากที่ผมได้เห็นภาพวัดอรุณราชวรารามในฉากหลังของภาพจากโดรนก็ทำให้นึกขึ้นมาได้ว่าผมควรจะเขียนเรื่องนาฬิกาเรือนพิเศษเรือนหนึ่งที่ผมโชคดีมีโอกาสได้เห็นเมื่อต้นปีนี้
ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นเรื่องของความบังเอิญครับ ปกติผมจะไปทำงานที่สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ปีละสองครั้งเพื่อรายงานข่าวนาฬิกาใหม่จากงาน SIHH ในเดือนมกราคมและงาน Baselworld ในเดือนมีนาคม เมื่อเสร็จทั้งสองงานนี้แล้วผมจะพยายามไปเยือนโรงงานผลิตนาฬิกาของแบรนด์ต่างๆ อย่างน้อยสามแห่งเพื่อเป็นความรู้และหาสิ่งน่าสนใจมานำเสนอผู้อ่าน World of Watches Thailand ซึ่งเป็นนิตยสารรายไตรมาสในเครือเดียวกันกับ Luxuo Thailand นี้ ครั้นเมื่อผมติดต่อ ochs und junior เมื่อปลายปีที่แล้วเพื่อขอไปชมการทำงาน คุณบีท ไวน์แมนซึ่งเป็นซีอีโอก็ตอบต้อนรับในทันที และยังเผยอีกด้วยว่าเขากำลังผลิตนาฬิกาเรือนพิเศษให้กับลูกค้าชาวไทยท่านหนึ่ง โดยจะขออนุญาตลูกค้าท่านนั้นโชว์นาฬิกาเรือนดังกล่าวให้ผมได้ชื่นชมก่อนที่จะนำส่งต่อไป
นาฬิการุ่นที่ลูกค้าท่านนี้เลือกคือ day/night ซึ่งทำงานด้วยเครื่อง Ulysse Nardin UN-320 ประกบกับโมดูลพิเศษที่บอกช่วงความยาวของกลางวันและกลางคืนของแต่ละวันในหนึ่งปีโดยใช้ปีกทางซ้ายและขวาของหน้าปัดที่ขยับขึ้นหรือลงทีละน้อยจนเราไม่สามารถสังเกตถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลงในแต่ละวันได้ สัญลักษณ์ดวงอาทิตย์ที่หมุนไปโดยรอบหน้าปัดนั้นจะบอกเวลาดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้น ณ จุดที่มันข้ามขีดเส้นขอบฟ้าบนปีกข้างทางซ้าย เวลาเที่ยงตรงตามเวลาสุริยคติจริงก็คือเวลาที่สัญลักษณ์ดวงอาทิตย์อยู่ตรงกลางด้านบนสุดของหน้าปัด และจากนั้นก็จะเป็นเวลาดวงอาทิตย์ตกเมื่อสัญลักษณ์รูปดวงอาทิตย์ข้ามเส้นขอบฟ้าบนปีกข้างทางขวา การแสดงค่าทั้งหมดนี้จะตรงตามสภาพความเป็นจริงทางภูมิศาสตร์ของประเทศที่เจ้าของนาฬิกาอาศัยอยู่เพื่อมีการคำนวณค่าละติจูดที่ชัดเจนลงไปในเครื่องนาฬิกาแล้ว หากคุณจะย้ายไปอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศอื่นก็ต้องส่งนาฬิกาเรือนนี้กลับไปยัง ochs und junior เพื่อเปลี่ยนชิ้นส่วนชิ้นหนึ่งให้ได้ค่าละติจูดตรงกับประเทศใหม่ก็จะใช้งานต่อได้ทันที

เมื่อคุณไวน์แมนได้รับโจทย์นี้ไปแล้วจึงติดต่อศิลปินชื่อเบอร์นาแดท ซอมเมอร์ซึ่งเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการวาดภาพศิลป์ขนาดเล็กและการบูรณะชิ้นงานเซรามิกให้รับหน้าที่ต่อไป ในการนี้คุณซอมเมอร์จึงได้ลงมือผสมสีเองเพื่อให้ได้เฉดที่ต้องการสำหรับองค์ประกอบต่างๆ ของภาพ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นท้องฟ้า ริ้วแสง พระปรางค์ ฯลฯ แล้วจึงลงมือวาดภาพด้วยความละเอียดบรรจงจากต้นแบบขนาดใหญ่และต้นแบบขนาดเท่าจริง
งานนี้ไม่มีอะไรง่ายเลย เพราะเพียงการวาดภาพขนาดเล็กบนหน้าปัดนาฬิกาปกติก็ยากแล้ว แต่นี่ยังเป็นหน้าปัดแบบหลายชิ้นส่วน หลายระดับอีก เวลาวาดไปก็ต้องระวังไม่ให้เนื้อสีหนาจนทำให้ชิ้นส่วนเคลื่อนไหวเกิดการติดขัด เวลาประกอบก็ต้องดูแลให้องค์ประกอบของภาพต่อประสานกันได้อย่างไร้ที่ติ แต่ไม่ว่าจะยากเพียงใดก็สำเร็จเป็นผลงานที่น่าชื่นชม ที่ทำให้ทุกฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้องรู้สึกภาคภูมิใจ รวมถึงตัวผมในฐานะนักข่าวตัวเล็กๆ ด้วย

An exceptional watch and an exceptional personalisation for an exceptional collector

Thailand’s national television syndicated broadcast over the past few days was filled with images of joy, splendour and reverence as the royal coronation ceremony took place at various historical sites across the old town part of Bangkok. Traditions, rituals and architecture all combine to remind the Thai people how blessed they are to have this kind of heritage. The sight of the Temple of Dawn in the background of a drone shot also prompted me to write about a piece unique watch I had the good fortune to handle earlier this year.
It is a story of serendipity all right. In my quest to see as many watch manufactures as it is possible, I try to make at least three such visits after completing the two annual watch fairs in Switzerland (i.e. SIHH in January and Baselworld in March). When I contacted ochs und junior in the last quarter of 2018, CEO Beat Weinmann was quick to respond favourably. He also mentioned that he was preparing a watch with an artistic dial for a Thai customer, and that he was going to seek the gentleman’s permission to show it to me prior to the delivery.
The watch in question is an ochs und junior day/night model. Powered by the Ulysse Nardin Calibre UN-320, it displays the changing day and night time lengths for each day of the year with imperceptibly moving fans to the left and the right of the dial. A revolving symbol of the sun indicates sunrise when it crosses the left horizon line, solar noon when it reaches the top of the dial and sunset as it crosses the right horizon line. All indications are calculated for the geographical country of the watch owner, thanks to a special part designed for exact latitudes. In the case of relocation, ochs und junior can replace this part with the correct one for the new country without a problem.
For the Thai customer (who shall remain anonymous at his request), the idea was to have a full miniature painting on all visible parts of the dial, including the moving ones. That was a first for ochs und junior as the watch model was launched just a few months prior. His choice of scene to depict was clear from the beginning – he wanted the Temple of Dawn, a truly logical choice considering the indications of the watch.
Weinmann then enlisted the help of Bernadette Sommer who specialises in fine art miniature painting and ceramic restorations. After mixing the paints herself to achieve the exacting shade for the sky, the glow, the temple and so on, the artist carefully replicated the elements of the scene from the oversized and the 1:1 mock-ups with extreme thoroughness. Miniature painting on a regular watch dial is obviously difficult by nature, but in this case she must deal also with the added complexity of a multi-part dial. They had to test the watch extensively to make sure that the added thickness of the paint will not affect the functioning of the moving parts, and that the visuals line up without fault. Eventually, the project was a success and all parties involved are happy, myself (as the witnessing journalist) included.
ochs und junior is a very unique watch company. They produce approximately 130 watches per year at their 180-square-metre workshop, within short walking distance to the Lion Monument of Lucerne. As they do not sell through retailers, you need to order online make an appointment to come pick your watch up here or have it delivered to your doorstep by FedEx.
All watches produced are personalised to a certain level at no cost or minimal cost. You can try the online configurator first to see instantly if the colour and finishing of your choice for the dial, the hands and all indicators involved will work well together. If a special or precious material is involved, the configurator will add the extra cost to the mock-up on the spot. And, of course, you can have miniature painting like this particular customer but it will cost you a small fortune. Feel free to talk to ochs und junior if you have other ideas in mind. Beat Weinmann will entertain virtually any request from you – with the exception of ones involving an addition of a commercial logo or something along that line. ochs und junior watches are meant to be kept pure. They are produced exclusively in titanium grade 5 and sterling silver 925.
