In a photography series titled “Teen And Transgender Comparative Studies,” artist Charlie White has shot a series of teen girls paired with their transgender adult female doppelganger. These young girls, aged between 12 to 14, look strikingly similar to the transgender adult positioned next to them in the photograph. Both models look straight into the camera lens carrying blank, lifeless expressions, inciting a slight uneasiness in the viewer. White explains, “When I found the parallels in a side-by-side study of a teen girl and M-to-F transgender, both of the portraits operated as I had hoped, they became evident of something in the subjects that was not apparent in the single studies.” This work was created to explore the two different stages of transformation; a young girl’s path towards womanhood and the other a surgical and biological transformation path towards womanhood. White’s works have been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum, Oslo Kunstforening, Norway and the Singapore Biennale.
