, one of the world’s largest cruise lines, on Monday signed an initial agreement with Taiwan to jointly build a pier on a scenic island group in the Taiwan Strait.

The pier in Penghu, due for completion in 2016, will cost an estimated Tw$1 billion ($33.3 million).

Miami-based Royal Caribbean will have a 51 percent stake in the investment, with the state-owned Taiwan International Ports Corporation holding the remainder, the Taiwanese company said.

It said the pier would be able to accommodate calls by the 225,000-tonne Oasis of The Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship.
