Patek Philippe เคยจัดนิทรรศการขนาดใหญ่เท่านี้มาแล้วสี่ครั้ง คือที่ดูไบ (ค.ศ. 2012) มิวนิค (ค.ศ. 2013) ลอนดอน (ค.ศ. 2015) และนิวยอร์ค (ค.ศ. 2017) สำหรับนิทรรศการ Watch Art Grand Exhibition ครั้งที่ห้าซึ่งเป็นครั้งแรกในเอเชียนี้ประเทศที่ได้รับเลือกให้เป็นทำเลของการจัดงานก็คือสิงคโปร์เพราะเป็นเหมือนศูนย์กลางที่สะดวกต่อการเดินทางของนักสะสมและผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องทั้งปวงจากประเทศโดยรอบในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยทาง Patek Philippe เองก็โหมโปรโมทนิทรรศการดังกล่าวมาตั้งแต่ต้นปีแล้ว และเมื่อถึงวันงานจริงเราก็ได้เห็นว่าในเรื่องของความแกรนด์นั้นเขาจัดเต็มไม่ให้ผิดจากชื่องานเลยจริงๆ
ทุกองค์ประกอบของนิทรรศการนี้ผ่านการไตร่ตรองมาอย่างดีแล้ว เมื่อเราทราบเป็นครั้งแรกว่าสถานที่จัดงานคือโรงละคร Sands Theatre ที่ Marina Bay Sands เราก็แปลกใจว่าทำไมไม่ไปจัดที่อื่นที่มันง่ายกว่านั้น เพราะโรงละครย่อมต้องมีลักษณะเป็นพื้นลาดลงไปหาเวทีและต้องมีเก้าอี้ติดตั้งมากมาย การจะมาดัดแปลงให้เป็นที่ราบเพื่อจัดนิทรรศการให้คนเดินนั้นย่อมเป็นเรื่องลำบาก เราเก็บข้อสงสัยนี้ไว้ครึ่งปี ครั้นเมื่อถึงวันงานจึงได้ถามไถ่ถึงเหตุผลแล้วก็ทราบว่า Patek Philippe มองการณ์ไกล ไม่อยากให้ใครต้องไปยืนตากแดดตากฝนเข้าคิวรอเข้างาน ให้มีพื้นที่รอสบายๆ ในห้างที่มีระบบปรับอากาศจะดีที่สุด ประโยคเดียวจบ หมดคำถาม ฟังเสร็จแล้วเราก็เดินเข้างานได้ทันที!
Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore ประกอบด้วยห้องต่างๆ จำนวน 10 ห้อง ได้แก่ ห้อง Cinema ที่ฉายภาพยนตร์เกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาของแบรนด์ Patek Philippe ห้อง Current Collection ที่ตกแต่งตามแบบห้องโถงใหญ่ของซาลอนของ Patek Philippe ที่เจนีวาซึ่งห้องนี้จะนำทุกคนต่อไปสู่ห้อง Napoleon ที่ดูมืดและขลัง ทว่ามีการฉายภาพเคลื่อนไหวเป็นวิวของทะเลสาบเจนีวาตามมุมจริงที่จะมองเห็นได้จากซาลอนดังกล่าวเพื่อสร้างบรรยากาศ
ห้องที่เรามองว่าควรค่ากับการใช้เวลานานที่สุดก็คือห้อง Museum และห้อง Rare Handcrafts เพราะเพียงสองห้องนี้ก็อัดแน่นด้วยคุณค่าในระดับที่คุ้มค่าเดินทางไปสิงคโปร์แล้ว ภายในห้อง Museum นั้นมีการจัดแสดงนาฬิกา Patek Philippe เรือนสำคัญมากมาย รวมถึงนาฬิกาพก Calibre 89 จากปี 1989 ซึ่งมีคอมพลิเคชั่นต่างๆ มากถึง 33 รายการและใช้เวลาในการพัฒนาถึงห้าปีก่อนที่จะต้องใช้เวลาผลิตอีกสี่ปี นาฬิกาพกสองหน้า Star Caliber 2000 ที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อรับสหัสวรรษใหม่ก็มาอยู่ในงานนี้ด้วยเช่นกัน นาฬิกาที่เก่าแก่กว่ายุคสมัยของ Patek Philippe ก็มีเหมือนที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ของเขาที่เจนีวาทุกประการ เรือนเด่นๆ ที่เลือกมาบ้างก็เป็นนาฬิกาพกแบบมีออโตมาตอนหรือรีพีทเตอร์ บ้างก็เป็นนาฬิกาแบบจี้ห้อยคอ หรือเป็นนาฬิกาที่ประกบอยู่กับของอื่นจนดูแปลกตา เช่น นาฬิกากับกล้องส่องทางไกลหรือนาฬิกาแบบมีตัวเรือนทรงกล่องใช้เก็บอุปกรณ์เย็บปักของผู้หญิงได้
ส่วนในห้อง Rare Handcrafts นั้นคุณจะได้พบกับการสาธิตงานช่างต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการวาดหน้าปัดด้วยเทคนิคเอนาเมล การแกะสลัก งานกิโยเช่และแม้แต่วู๊ดมาเคททรี่ก็มา โดยรอบห้องจะมีผลงานที่เป็นนาฬิกาข้อมือ นาฬิกาพกและนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะรุ่นต่างๆ ที่ใช้เทคนิคดังกล่าววางอยู่ตามตู้เพื่อความครบถ้วนในอรรถรส อย่างเช่นชุดนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหกเรือนที่มีหน้าปัดแสดงภาพแผนที่มุมสูงของเมืองต่างๆ ได้แก่ สิงคโปร์ กัวลาลัมเปอร์ มะนิลา จาการ์ต้า กรุงเทพมหานครและฮานอยโดยใช้เทคนิคคลัวซอนเน่เอนาเมล ตัวเรือนโดยรอบมีการแกะกิโยเช่แล้วลงแฟลงเก้เอนาเมลสีฟ้าเทอร์ควอยซ์ทับ ทั้งหกดีไซน์มีผลิตแค่เพียงเรือนเดียวในโลกเท่านั้น
แล้วก็อย่าลืมเผื่อเวลาด้วยเพราะจากจุดนี้ไปยังมีอีกหลายห้อง เช่น ห้อง Watchmakers ห้อง Movements ห้อง Grand Complications ทั้งหมดไล่เรียงกันไปเป็นทางเดินแบบวันเวย์จนถึงทางออก ทุกห้องมีอะไรน่าสนใจแตกต่างกันไป และภายในงานนี้คุณยังจะได้พูดคุยกับช่างนาฬิกาของ Patek Philippe อย่างเป็นกันเองด้วย ที่เคยสงสัยที่เคยอยากรู้จะได้ถามทีเดียวจากผู้รู้ตัวจริง
ตามธรรมเนียมของ Patek Philippe เมื่อจัดงานระดับใหญ่ขนาดนี้ก็ต้องมีนาฬิการุ่นพิเศษออกมาเป็นที่ระลึกกัน ในครั้งนี้นาฬิการุ่นพิเศษเกือบทุกรุ่นจะมีสีแดงตามสีประจำชาติของสิงคโปร์ และยังเป็นสีแห่งความมั่งคั่งและความโชคดีตามความเชื่อของวัฒนธรรมแถบบ้านเรา นาฬิการุ่น Ref. 5930 World Time Chronograph ซึ่งเป็นลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นจำนวน 300 เรือนจึงมีหน้าปัดไล่สีจากแดงตรงกลางไปยังดำโดยรอบนอก ส่วน Ref. 5167 Aquanaut ซึ่งเป็นลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นจำนวน 500 เรือนก็มีขีดนาทีสีแดงเข้าคู่กับสายยางที่เป็นแดงทั้งเส้น ที่จัดเต็มที่สุดเห็นจะเป็น Ref. 5067 Aquanaut Luce ชุด 300 เรือนสำหรับคุณผู้หญิงที่มีหน้าปัดสีแดงราสเบอร์รี่เข้าคู่กับสายยางสีเดียวกันให้หวานกันแบบสุดๆ ไปเลย
นิทรรศการครั้งสำคัญของ Patek Philippe นี้นอกจากจะสร้างคุณประโยชน์ให้กับตัวแบรนด์เองแล้วยังส่งผลดีต่ออุตสาหกรรมนาฬิกาโดยรวมด้วย เด็กและเยาวชนที่พ่อแม่พามาในวันนี้ก็อาจจะโตไปเป็นผู้ซื้อหรือนักสะสมนาฬิกาในอนาคต และไม่แน่บางคนอาจจะอยากทำงานในแวดวงนี้เลยก็ได้ไม่ว่าจะในสายเทคนิคหรือสายพาณิชย์ก็ตาม คือถ้าในใจมีฝันแล้วอะไรก็ย่อมเกิดขึ้นได้และสวยงามด้วย

The Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019 is a walk into the heart of Patek Philippe.

Patek Philippe has had a string of successful exhibitions in Dubai (2012), Munich (2013), London (2015) and New York (2017). For the fifth time globally and the first time in Asia, the Genevan brand has chosen Singapore as the location for ease of access by collectors, enthusiasts and other interested parties around Southeast Asia. The brand has been talking about this Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore since earlier this year, and it turns out to be every bit as grand as the promise.
Everything about this exhibition was very well considered. We were somewhat perplexed though about the choice of the Sands Theatre at the Marina Bay Sands as the venue for the exhibition. Theatres are sloped and decked out with seats, but you need a flat space to stage an exhibition. Less modification would have been required if an empty space somewhere else in Singapore was chosen. When asked about the rationale for this extra work, we were told that the venue was chosen for maximum climate control and visitors’ comfort. Patek Philippe does not want anyone to queue in the sun or the rain but in air conditioned environment!
The Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore is designed with ten themed rooms, each with a unique feature of its own. The Cinema Room screens a primer movie on how the Patek Philippe came to be. The Current Collection Room mimics the appointment of the Patek Philippe Salon on Rue du Rhône in Geneva, leading to the dark but charismatic Napoleon Room with a large screen showing motion picture of Lake Geneva as seen in real life from the salon.
Our favourites are the Museum Room and the Rare Handcrafts Room. The quality of these two rooms already justifies a trip to Singapore. In the Museum Room, you will find historic Patek Philippe timepieces like the Calibre 89 pocket watch from 1989 which packs 33 complications and required five years of research and four years of construction, and the Star Caliber 2000 pocket watch which is another double-faced timepiece developed to welcome the new millennium. Other exhibits include those antique pocket and pendant watches that predate the manufacture, just like what they have at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The selection is impressive. It includes some with automaton and repeater mechanism, and those unusual items like a watch with telescope and a watch that packs lady’s sewing kit inside the case.
In the Rare Handcrafts Room, you will be able to observe up close as artisans demonstrate how they apply their unsurpassed skills in enamelling, engraving, guillochage and even wood marquetry. Finished watches and clocks with the said techniques are on display nearby for your total amazement. A set of six table clocks, for example, depict an aerial map view of Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok and Hanoi using the cloisonné enamel technique, and complete the sophisticated look with the application of turquoise blue flinqué enamel over guilloched side panels. These are all unique pieces, in case you are wondering.
Be sure to spare some time though for the Watchmakers Room, the Movements Room or the Grand Complications Room awaiting down the one-way path to the exit. There are really more things to see than you have time. It is also a very rare opportunity to meet with Patek Philippe watchmakers who are most who are most qualified to help you with your burning questions.
Several special watches are of course introduced to mark this important event – most of them are given a touch of red to link them with Singapore, as well as to denote prosperity and good fortune. Ref. 5930 World Time Chronograph is a limited edition of 300 watches, for example, with a dial featuring a gradation of red in the centre to black on the peripheral. Ref. 5167 Aquanaut, limited to 500 pieces, has red minute chapters and a bright red rubber strap. The 300-piece run of Ref. 5067 Aquanaut Luce for ladies is sweetest with a raspberry red dial to match the strap.
This grand exhibition by Patek Philippe is a great service not only to the brand but to the watchmaking industry in general. Many of those young children will become lifelong watch collectors and some may even be inspired to join the one of the watchmaking professions, whether in the technical or commercial side of it. The possibility is endless when one is adequately inspired.
We learned from the official opening ceremony speech that at least 32,000 people have registered online to visit this exhibition. Later on, we discovered that online registration was maxed out and anyone interested need to queue upon arrival (in the comfort of air conditioning, of course, as explained above). Admission to the exhibition is free regardless. Expect to spend two hours exploring the 1,800 square metres space of the exhibition with the audio guide in your hand.
